I Know Commands!

(Even though sometimes he needs treats to do them)

I went to dog school! (and did my homework)

That means that I know a few tricks:

  • Touch: show him the treat (can be a few feet away), then hold your non-treat hand out where he can reach and say touch. He should boop his nose on your hand. He gets a treat!

  • Wait: When you’re leaving the house tell him to ‘up up’ onto his chair and then ‘wait’ while giving a slow firm air chop. If he lifts his butt, you close the door. If he sits, you can leave through the door while telling him he’s a good boy.

  • Walking better: when walking with him to keep him from pulling, do little, tiny leash tugs (very slight, just enough to keep him aware of where we are, and where we’re going) as we walk.

  • Leave it: Mainly for things that are non-food, spicy bugs (bees/wasps) and gross stuff on walks.

  • Drop it: He should know to drop whatever is in his mouth. This is harder for high value things like bones on the street already in his mouth.

  • He overall knows sit, down, off (for jumping) and a big boss voice ‘no’ is always effective.
