Iggy LOVES Walks

Take him anywhere and he'll be happy.

Walking pattern: Iggy traditionally gets a morning walk, right after waking up, and (optional) around 2-3pm. We're new to the neighborhood so don't have a set path yet. He’s probably fine to just get his morning walk, and some afternoon/evening play.

His Harness and Leash: Iggy’s pink harness and waist leash are hanging off the garage door organizer. His harness is worn with the tags on his back. Attached to his leash are a plastic poop bag holder, and a little drawstring bag for treats. He is an ok walker, and gets very distracted by smells, but can usually be persuaded to keep moving with a small tug on his leash and saying “Iggy, c’mon, let’s go!”.

Iggy is unreliably reactive: Iggy is getting better at ignoring other dogs, but feel free to liberally tug him along and encourage him. When we pass other dogs close by I keep a tight hold on his leash because he’ll try and lunge-play at other dogs which goes over in various negative/positive ways depending on the dog. He has a friendship cry, which sounds concerning but it is friendly. He’ll usually react poorly to another dog if he gets quiet and into his hunting/stalking pose where he gets low and straightens out his body moving very slowly.

If he reacts poorly to another dog, feel free to pick him up or just drag him until he realizes he can stop barking. I usually tell him “quiet” the whole time to reinforce that I want him to stop barking, because “no” doesn’t seem to make sense to him. He really doesn’t like any dog that looks like a German shepherd or sometimes black Labradors. No rhyme or reason, just no. Sometimes we pick him up if he gets too riled up.

Heel: He’s working on ‘heel’, just make sure you have treats in your hand and keep them in front of his face while passing another dog he seems to have interest in. Lots of praise keeps him on track, but I still keep a solid hold on his leash because he’ll leap when you’re least expecting it.
